Cryptoriana – The Seductiveness of Decay; the highly anticipated new release from Cradle of Filth will put an end to the 2 year wait on September 22.
From Nuclear Blast…”Dani Filth states. “We
mutate, breed and run totally amok with this album…Cryptoriana’ implies the Victorians’ infatuation with the supernatural, the grave and the fervently ghoulish. The subtitle, ‘The Seductiveness Of Decay’, further cements the attraction to death and the glittering lengthy process of self-annihilation.”
By now, we as Cradle of Filth fans who have grown up with the band have to a certain extent come to know what to expect with the band. In spite of numerous line-up changes, Dani Filth has been flying the filthy flag since the inception. It’s all there…Dani’s drawn out screeches, nasty break-downs, catchy hooks and trademark style of riffing. I’ll even go so far as to blame Dani’s dual Master’s English literature degrees for his unmistakable talent of lyrical precision in their songs. His way of writing reeks of old English prose. The lead single/video “Heartbreak and Seance” is a perfect example with its choral-lined bridges. Perhaps one slightly noticeable musical nuance that appears in the single is an almost “virtuoso-style” guitar bridge tapping. Don’t worry, fans… it’s not overdone. “Achingly Beautiful” is a blistering fast paced track which showcases a similar effect and the vocals of Lindsay Schoolcraft.
But then sometimes they come along and take things even one step further. Such is the case with Cryptoriana. Even with consistently over the top presentation, the band has never really taken themselves too seriously. In fact, it seems that they’ve grown more mature again with Mr. Filth leading the charge. While songs like “You Will Know the Lion By His Claw” recall the anthemic grandeur of “Gilded Cunt,” tracks like “Vengeful Spirit” remind us of the days of “Her Ghost in the Fog,” and lead us to believe these new tracks could one day be regarded as classics as the old ones are now.
Songs like the title track bear somewhat of a resemblance to NWOBHM bands, specifically old-school Maiden. This is no surprise as Mr. Filth has mentioned in interviews before that Powerslave is his favorite album of theirs. Metal-Archives.com reported in one article that the same album influenced Damnation and a Day.
Old-school and new fans of Cradle of Filth are sure to rejoice at the release of Cryptoriana. All that we love about the band is there along with the assurance that they still have a long road ahead of them.
