Urze De Lume – “As Árvores Estão Secas e Não Têm Folhas” Album Review (neo/loner folk)

coverFrom our friends at Equilibrium Music comes the return of Urze de Lume and their new offering, As Árvores Estão Secas e Não Têm Folhas.

The Portuguese quartet are at it again with their unique blend of reflective darkened folk.

“On their third album, URZE DE LUME turn inwards for a soothing journey which illustrates not only departure, but also homecoming, meticulously setting to music memories imbued with both nostalgia and longing. “

On the 12 tracks that comprise the album, there is a definitive quiet and contemplative purity about this release.  The album definitely has a very organic, natural quality about it from the start to finish, even with the opening and closing tracks where we clearly have a field recording of someone walking.  In the final track, “Alvorada de Destrocos” we find a great example how the music is mixed with what sound like authentic field recordings/storm sounds.  This is the music that continues regardless of weather; regardless of challenge.

Of course this album is predominantly based around the acoustic guitar as the lead instrument.  There are moments however where we hear a rabel (similar to violin) accompany or in the case of “Fantasmas das Horas Mortas” take the lead role.  In this track we have a natural, fireside, outdoor vibe.  Occasionally minimal but appropriate percussion appears; “Entardece em Mim” is one example of such instance.

Every so often we hear male spoken word mixed in but done so like a narration above while the “story” is being played out in front of us.

As Árvores Estão Secas e Não Têm Folhas speaks loudly of hope and even louder of better days.  These are acoustic tracks for the silent storytellers.  Furthermore, you don’t need to understand Portugese to hear this.  You don’t even need to speak.  The music herein speaks for itself.

I see no reason why Urze de Lume won’t be considered among the classics like Darkwood, Empyrium or Sol Invictus.  This is just great, pure and simple dark/neo/loner folk.

As Árvores Estão Secas e Não Têm Folhas is available on Digipak CD and digital download now.
