Diving into the realm of depression and anxiety is not always easy.  Neither is listening to an effective soundtrack to the journey.  Swedish dark ambient artist Oestergaards presents us with their new EP, Moloken which tackles this very journey.

”Moloken” is a settlement with depression and anxiety. After years of struggling with mental illness, this record is the end of the story, the final relief and a finger to those who have haunted his mind.”

Moloken (Swedish word for; distressed, depressed, sad, miserable, melancholy, dejected, cloudy, downcast, down pressed, down, gloomy)”

Moloken is a five-song EP; long enough to give the listener a glimpse into what a soundtrack to a descent into madness might sound like.  The artist combines low drone currents and various ambient planes; planes that are, at times reminiscent of older death industrial releases.

Some of you might recall the film “What Dreams May Come” where Robin Williams’ character nearly lost his mind after descending into hell to find his wife.  This EP sends a similar message but perhaps on a more personal, paranoid level…maybe not so much yearning for another person but for ones own sanity.  Then again, the mood is somewhat one of being comfortable in a state of discomfort.

Moloken is a soundtrack for the repeated thoughts of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and passages that mimic the sudden, unexpected shifts in mood.  The album even contains some haunting, spoken-word lyrics, possibly mimicking the voices in a madman’s head.  The track “Assint (In The Name of Nothing)” is as good of an example as any on this release.  The slow drones are like the constant mood while the noise rises almost of the point of insanity.

The EP should satisfy fans of dark ambient and death industrial combined with drones.  Sonically, it’s a very interesting listen, albeit appropriately unsettling and almost completely devoid of light.
