The Joy Of Nature – “Until Only The Mountain Remains” Album Review (NeoFolk)

Desperate times call for respite music.  It seems that a venture into nature may be perhaps one of the safest spots should one succumb to the desperation of self-quarantine.  From the Italian label Dornwald Records comes the first album of THE JOY OF NATURE in five years.  Inspired by Taoist poetry, the title comes from the following poem by Li Po:

“The birds have vanished down the sky.
Now the last cloud drains away.
We sit together, the mountain and me,
until only the mountain remains.”  Most poems that were used to make this album were written by poets who used to spend most of their time isolated.

13 tracks make up the release.  At some moments, such as in “Broken Tablets,” The JOY OF NATURE stick to a more spoken word mixed with Sol Invictus vibe, but more often than not, lean toward a more ethereal landscape which effectively leaves the listener able to lose themselves in the album.  Tracks like the lengthy “The World of Dew” even find tasteful ways to weave noise planes in and out.  The styles balance a dreamy neo-folk with an acoustic new age approach.  Surely enjoyable for fans on both sides of the fence.  The production production/mixing on this release is extraordinarily clear as well.

“Until Only The Mountain Remains” features the collaborations of J. Aernus (Wolfskin, Karnnos), Troy Southgate (H.E.R.R., Seelenlicht), Sandro Menino (Cotard Delusion, Sid & The Fall, etc.), Biagio Verdolini (Rapeciâz) and Conceição Raposo.
